Northern Ireland is a society emerging from 30 years of conflict. This three day conference will be to reflect, share, strengthen and celebrate the positive role of women internationally during conflict, stepping into transition and moving towards a future of peace where women participate equally on a political, social and economic level. |

Women's Rights and Northern Ireland
The negotiated settlement to the conflict in Northern Ireland, including the Belfast Agreement of 1998, recognised that there were rights particular to the context of Northern Ireland in addition to the existing provisions under UK, Irish or European law and conventions. The Human Rights Commission (www.nihrc.org) was established to advise the Secretary of State on a Bill of Rights for Northern Ireland. The Human Rights Consortium (www.billofrightsni.org) was formed in 2000 to campaign for a strong and inclusive Bill of Rights, to ensure that civil society contributes to the process. |

 TWN Contributes to Learning on Gender and Local Development in Brussels
TWN was approached by the European Union (EU) funded project Getting Engaged to provide some insights into policy development outside the experience of the project partners. A presentation was requested at the transnational workshop “Promotion of Gender Equality in Local Development: Issues and Actions” on local policy development in Northern Ireland.
In particular, there was interest in the Gender-Proofing Checklist TWN uses for policy consultation responses. The Gender-Proofing Checklist was developed by the Policy and Research Sub-Group of the TWN management board, which was devised as a means for alleviating the pressure to respond to all policy consultation processes by presenting policy-makers with a simple, single-page list of measures that any policy was required to incorporate in order not to discriminate against women. This document is sent to consulting bodies when developing policy and is available on the TWN website. |

TWN Study Visit To Sarajevo 2007
Supported by a bursary from NI-CO, the TWN Policy and Research Officer went to Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, 5-9 November 2007 to make connections with organisations working in the area of gender equality and to investigate comparisons between the post-conflict contexts of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Northern Ireland in terms of women’s empowerment. Specifically, the intention was to examine gender empowerment initiatives in Bosnia and Herzegovina in comparison with the Positive Action for Women Measure for the Programme for Peace and Reconciliation. |

Top Training Accolade for TWN Peace II Funded Project
A North Belfast initiative, part financed by the European Union through the EU Programme for Peace and Reconciliation managed for the Special EU Programmes Body by TWN, aimed at helping women to become more self- sustainable, has been awarded a National Training Award at the 2007 ceremony.

Community education under threat amid praise for community success
The WEAVE project, run by Intercomm in North Belfast, has won a prestigious national Training Award, not just at regional level, but at national level. On presenting the award, the Minister for Employment and Learning, Sir Reg Empey, stated:
Well done to Intercomm – WEAVE for developing this initiative. This training appears to have had a positive impact on women from the North Belfast area, encouraging them to further develop their employment prospects
